Of course, I am probably guaranteeing that LJ will make with a new-run that renders this invalid and impossible. Oh, well... We're to understand that the straight reprints are right around the corner.

Well, of course Lynn switched plots on us; she needs to show us that John is a jerk and Mike is a nuisance. As for Connie and Annie, they should be used to Elly's inability to get her story straight by now.
You have a good contrast between new-run and reprint storylines. 1981 Lynn and 2010 Lynn clearly have 2 different stories in mind, and 2010 Lynn was not clever enough to get them to work together.
Aside from this, I enjoy seeing Connie and Anne have an actual conversation. I don't think I ever remember this happening in the regular strip without Elly being there.
I think a friendship between Connie and Annie would make a good alternative viewpoint as the strip goes into full-time re-runs. They could take turns visiting Elly, then meet up to laugh at her and gossip about her behind her back. Rather like she does to them, in fact.
There's a simpler explanation: Elly, as usual, wasn't really listening at all when Phil said that he and the other woman were "playing the cello," and completely missed the meaning. The rest was her filling in the blanks from her own thought processes.

I do enjoy imagining them having that sort of a friendship. Elly would feel totally threatened if she knew, though. ;)
