'Allo, 'Allo

Lynn has written that the original inspiration for Connie was an art teacher of hers.  She didn't adore her--she ridiculed her by mimicking her and drawing caricatures of her.  I was going to have Connie allude to Elly filling a notebook with mean doodles of the art teacher, but canned that in favor of the 'Allo-girl reveal.  But here's the between-the-lines/panels bit:  Elly is lying in panel two.  :)

She's also lying in Panel One; she does think of Connie as being a tramp. I would go so far as to say that her explanation of Allo Girl is a lie as well.

Good point! She so does.

I would go so far as to say that her explanation of Allo Girl is a lie as well.

This might well turn out to be the case--especially if Lynn does explain her in the strip, after all.

I think you are hitting a high point in FOOBar. Not only are you giving sensible explanations for the things missing in the source material, but you are snarking the source material author's comments about the characters, and telling funny jokes, all the while creating a storyline spanning the course of a week. It will be difficult to top this week. I hope Lynn doesn't go to straight reprints next week, just so I can see more FOOBar.

Thanks for the kind words, howtheduck. I also hope Lynn's not ready to go to straight reprints. If she does, I'll have some scrambling to do. :)

This is our only clue. She wrote this back on February 23 to you.

Some new stuff is on the way...but there is very little follow up on this story idea. At the time, I had planned a more complicated series, but did not know how to keep from detracting from the main family unit. I then left the readers with NO idea what was going on...now there is a bit more info. Because I am working towards getting the story back on track, I am also short of time and space, so just mentioning who this person is, will have to do. Thanks! LJ

At the time she knew she was going to Thailand at the beginning of March. She has to have 6 weeks advance on dailies and 8 weeks advance on Sundays. Assuming 2 weeks in Thailand, that means at the beginning of March, she has to have 8 weeks on dailies and 10 weeks on Sundays. That takes you through March and most of April.

Unlike when she talked about doing all the new-runs in December, Lynn does not brag on how much work she has accomplished. She simply says that she is short of time and space. Time I can understand at February 23, with a beginning of March deadline to get things done. I think, at a bare minimum, Lynn has to line up the daily strips so that a Monday in 1981 matches a Monday in 2010, because her stories run in 6-day sequences and then she needs to do enough Sunday new-runs to line them up chronologically, since the Sunday strips are the ones which most often reflect the holidays.

With yesterday’s strip finishing out the March, 1981 unreprinted strips, Lynn has moved to a point where she can go to straight reprints with the dailies starting with the April 6, 1981 strip. If I was doing this, I would do 3 weeks of new-runs to synchronize Monday, April 6, 1981 with April 5, 2010. That would make things very easy for going to straight reprints. However, that would be tough for Lynn to do. If Lynn was planning to do that, I can’t see her saying she was limited on time and space, just time. Also, I think she would brag about giving us a lot of new material. She doesn’t do that; however, she specifically says she is going to just mention who the “’Allo?” girl is. There are a couple ways this could happen:

1. Tomorrow’s new-run and that’s it. Off to straight reprints on Monday.
2. We have a week of new-runs and it happens in there. Off to straight reprints the next week.
3. A Sunday strip, since Lynn has reprinted all of them through most of June, 1981. She has to have 10 new-runs for these minus the Easter, 1981 Sunday strip which she has not reprinted and is probably saving for that date.

The way it reads to me is that it is the end of February, and Lynn has mostly done everything she is going to do before she goes to Thailand. She gets your message asking about the “’Allo?” girl and realizes that she promised more on this story about Connie and it is not in the material she has prepared. So, she feels obligated to give you an explanation of sorts before she heads off to Thailand.

That's what I would do. If she does what you suspect she's going to do, she'll leave a lot of people wondering why the Pattersons celebrate all of the major holidays about three weeks early.

I have a sinking suspicion that Lynn decided showing the 'Allo girl = mentioning her. But we'll see, eh? :)

Constance Wainwright reference! The wrong address! The phone greeting!

::nearly explodes with excitement just to read so much awesomeness all in one strip::

Maybe, but Lynn said, "just mentioning who this person is" which is not what she has done. We still don't know who she is, unless this is one of things where Lynn expects us to figure it out, like when she put Luis Guzman in a t-shirt with a Mexican slogan on it. As it is, "'Allo?" = francophone phone sex operator. That's as good a choice as any.

...And Elly would know there's a francophone phone sex woman at that not-Phil's address HOW?

Well, Elly and John's marriage doesn't seem that affectionate, and by the end of the strip Elly and Connie seemed more like spouses than Elly and John did, so it's not too far-fetched to assume that Elly escaped a loveless marriage intially through calls to phone sex lines and eventually through a relationship with Connie. How did Elly know that her Allo Girl lived near Phil? Perhaps Connie isn't the only stalker on Sharon Park Drive.

...OK, fine, but it's not that much farther fetched than accepting as sane, mature and not suffering from PTSD someone who threw away her independent life to hurry home and marry the married man and new father who propositioned her just after she was nearly raped.

I had started to write some exposition-heavy dialogue where Elly explains that after Connie dropped the pipe, 'Allo girl picked it up and found "Property of Phil Richards" on it. Then she was able to get it back to him. I might yet bring some of that in, but DreadedCandiru2 has raised the intriguing prospect that Elly is lying about the whole thing--and on the off-chance that Lynn actually does get around to explaining 'Allo girl in the strip, I could fall back on that.

OTOH, I'm fond of forworse's theory. :)
