They have their glasses on because they want to see everything

First off, let me get a "Daaaaaaaaayyyyuuuummmn, John got it goin' on" out of the way before I get to my point.

Now that I've indirectly congratulated you on a nifty plot twist, I'd like to say that this strip reminds me of something that's occurred to me from time to time. I'd be willing to bet money that both Connie and Ted spent the greater part of the early seventies warning John that he was about to embark upon a ruinous folly by pursuing a relationship with Elly Richards. Granted, he seems to have part-way come to his senses but I doubt he's got the stones to go all the way. He may dream of escape but he does know he married the lunatic Lynn wants us to think Connie is; he quite rightly fears what she might do if he tries to get the Hell out. As for their mutual belief that "Stone Season" is as untouchable as it is unreadable, your world is a bit more realistic so they're likely to be right.

I don't think John met Ted until it was too late to be warned--and Connie would have been "team Elly" during their university years (though no doubt she told Elly that dropping out to marry future-dentist boy was not a great plan).

I agree that John wouldn't have the nerve to leave Elly--not only because he fears her crazy, but also he's pretty comfortable with his situation, plus probably would feel guilty about the whole "broken home" aspect for his kids. Also, while he enjoys Connie as a little somethin'-somethin' on the side, I don't think he really wants to be married to her.

Yeah. I can see that. I just wonder what he's gonna do after Connie gets transferred. Maybe he spends all his time in the workshop looking at porn.

I don't think that John made a mistake in marrying Elly- he wanted a limp baby-making, house-cleaning and dinner-making machine who would make him feel superior by acting as a verbal punching bag to his vicious, cruel put-downs, and that's what he got. Disliking Elly doesn't make me like John.

In fact, I hope you have Connie setting up John for a big fall here. I don't like the idea of John just using stupid, man-hungry Connie--- it would be nice to see Connie realizing full well what an ass John is and just using HIM.

I think you are spot-on, jjamele. John has exactly the wife he wants--no sympathy there. I also don't imagine that Connie harbors romantic feelings for him--as Friday's FOOBAR will make painfully clear. ;)

Watching the malignant idiot get it in the shorts promises to be a lovely Valentine's day gift for us all. He's the sort of vicious cretin mothers warn their daughters not to get involved with. How sad it was that Elly moved all that way in order to avoid parental interference when she could have been spared the pointless rage of a smugly sullen imbecile. No blasted wonder she wanted her kids to marry peole they knew; she probably wishes she'd married someone whose history she was familiar with going in.

I don't have any sympathy for Elly at all. I think she got the life she wanted and the husband she deserves. John and Elly marrying was like Liz and Anthony marrying; they made the dating market safer by taking themselves out of it. It's just too bad they insisted on inflicting themselves on children -- though John appears to be have been a better father than Anthony.

Love the strip :)

It's the little details, like John's unusual chest hair, that make this one for me.

clio-1, couldn't agree more. :)

howtheduck, the unusual chest hair is such a "Lynn" thing, I just had to!

As crappy a father as John was with Mike and Liz (barely interacting with them; often complaining about them; making snide remarks within earshot of them*), he really did seem attached to and involved with April; it's not too uncommon that a man who saw fatherhood as a burden in his 20s and 30s suddenly embraces it in his 40s--of course, that normally happens with a second relationship/marriage (yeah, I'm talking about you, John Lennon!).

*There's a strip from where Liz is five or six; in the first two panels Elly is scolding her for something and Liz is whining, "But it was an accident!" In the third panel, Elly mutters, "Why did I even have children?" and Liz pipes up, "Daddy says it was an accident!"

Destroyer of Worlds, ISTM the Pattersons and their associates are pretty much all nutcases in some fashion. ;)

It figures--it's as if it never occurred to him that his words can have an effect on his children.

It's the third sex scene in the FOOBiverse spin-offs! (Connie/Phil, April/Gerald, Connie/John) No matter what the situation, these newFOOBs are seeing more action than the originals.

My verification word is "buggrec" which I didn't read correctly the first time around and did a double-take.

Yup, in original-foob, it's hard to imagine all those pregnancies aren't immaculate conceptions.
