Memory and Distortion

I guess we'll have some Michael/Lawrence stuff to get through before the big reveal of Connie's fugly new look in the strip.  Getting just a bit ahead of things.

It's sort of horrible that she went all that way to be disappointed all over again; this is the second time she hasn't accomplished a thing and the only thing that makes it right is that it's now one hundred percent Elly's fault. Before, it was just twenty five to fifty percent Flapandhonk's doing.

I just realized she really looks like Tootsie. Though that wasn't out until 1982.

Without the scarf, I think she looks like Little Orphan Annie.

With a good colorist, she could look like a much less hot version of Joyce DeWit in "Three's Company."

Poor Connie.

I can't believe I said that. Reliving the Montreal storyline has killed what liking I had for the character, but even so, your strip today has made me feel sorry for her. I ought to point out that I feel sorry for your version of Connie only. Lynn's version deserves the orange Q-tip head.

Just when you thought no one could make you dislike Elly more than you already did... ;)

Heh--now that you mention it, I see the resemblance.

And I can see that resemblance, too. :)

How sad is it that "less hot version of Joyce DeWitt" would be a major step up for Connie?

Hee. FOOBAR Connie has the awareness that foob Connie lacks, and she is going through the horror of repeating her past mistakes while wanting to be able to act differently.

I noticed that while Lynn sort-of maintains Connie's new hairdo for a little while, she stops doing the shading that represents the new color the very next time Connie appears after the conclusion of the "Montreal" arc.

Yes, Connie's hair reverts to its original state very quickly, suggesting that her makeover was less expensive salon and more Lady Clairol and home perm.

It's like a sitcom hair change, though in the sitcoms, it's usually a disastrous hairdo the character is miserable about.* I remember this device being used in Taxi, the TV version of Clueless, and the sitcom that Ellen DeGeneris had after her show Ellen. With the sitcom bad hair, my willing suspension of disbelief usually takes a major hit, as I realize that all the character has to do to get rid of the hated look is to shampoo the hairspray out of her hair and restyle it.

In the strip for March 13, 1981, Connie still appears to have her new style, more or less, from the front/three-quarters views, but from the side, her hair seems to be morphing back into its old look. And the dye, as you suggest, appears to have washed out.

*In foob, we have a disastrous hairdo the character is happy about.

That link doesn't work... :(

Anonymous, unfortunately the "browse by date" feature was quickly pulled yesterday, and any links that it generated have been rendered invalid. The "search by punchline" function doesn't seem to be working, either, so I am at a loss as to how to get to the strip I was referring to.

It begins with Elly carrying a ginormous pile of laundry (of course!) and Connie saying, "Elly, I'm still embarrassed about the way I chased your brother." Next panel has Elly reaching into a kitchen cabinet as Connie says, "He must think I'm an idiot for showing up on his doorstep like that." Third panel has Elly dropping a tea bag into a kettle as Connie continues: "He must think I have no class--he must think..." Final panel has Elly holding two tea cups, drops of tea popping up from the tops of them, motion lines on either side of her hands and bug-eyes of startlement as Connie leans in and bellows, "Well, what does he think!!?"
