That's probably going to be the substance of an upcoming new-ruin; John will tell Elly to lay off because it isn't her business and she'll be furious. Bonus points will appear if he points out that she started it all in the first place.

I can't wait for the inevitable strip where Lynn begins confusing this arc with all her previous "MenAreEvilCheaters" strips. Watch for a magical First Nations man to pop up and tell Connie she can't marry Phil because he's made of snow!

Yup--no way would she admit to that.

Confusion is probably a given--I guess the only question is how confused she gets and how much she manages to muck up the continuity.

"He already has a wife! Her name is MUSIC! She's a jealous woman and won't allow her man to stray!!!" ;)

Right now, Lynn seems to want to play Elly as the "all-knowing" wise woman, who anticipates that Phil will break Connie's heart. New-run Elly knows how it ends up. Old-run Elly was written by a woman who had a brother, who was dating a single mom. The question was whether she would represent that woman as Connie or as another woman. Ultimately, she chose to introduce Georgia and later changed her to mimick the woman her brother ended up marrying by turning her into an audiologist.

Modern Lynn is writing the sage new-run Elly, despite the fact we know in the upcoming storyline, that while old-run Elly is discouraging Connie, she also gives her Phil's address in Montreal and agrees to take care of Lawrence for the duration of the trip. That's not exactly the same same as the disapproving new-run Elly.

At the heart of sage Elly is this ongoing and pervading aspect to romance in the comic strip where it is considered to be wrong to go on dates which do not lead to marriage, i.e. fun dates. Sage new-run Elly stands in the way of fun, and so, once again, the Yammersons hit the real point exactly.

You can't have fun on a date. Dating must lead to marriage, which we know is no fun.
