That could be where aprilp_katje is going with this, although I have high hopes for a twist or two.
And now, we come to the central dilemma; Elly wants to be famous but she doesn't want to pay her dues because she's lazy. If this trend holds, she'll break her spell because having to remember things is too much like work.
It does strike me as ironic that the life Elly seems to long for is the one she was poised to begin before her creator rebooted the series. Another year, and April would have been off to university. Elly would have had that empty nest she obviously coveted. Maybe Lynn would have been happier if she'd continued the modern strip by having Elly leave John (she'd have to do a "fix" to make herself feel better) and spend lots of time going on vacations... with Connie.

Or is just beginning to see what being a writer REALLY entails. She hasn't even gotten to the rejections and criticism, the idea of writing something only to toss it (which I have done quite a few times), the creating and testing of one's voice, and going out to actually read the stuff.

Great point. In the strip, we've seen Elly flirt with the idea of being a writer, but we really haven't seen her do much with the writing process. She had her little "library" column in the local paper for a little while, and then the whole "writing" thing just kind of fizzled. And she only ever took a couple of courses in night school.
Eesh, this is actually making ADULT MIKE look good! At least he had the drive to write his horrible book, finish it, and send it off!
But now I'm wondering who actually wrote the story first, Elly or Mike? Did Elly steal the story from Mike, or did Elly dictate to Mike what the story should be when she was helping him "edit"? The story is totally Elly, but Mike tikity-tapped his way through it. Argh, brain hurts now!
