One moment, the foobs were in a teal-and-lavender monstrosity of a wedding, and the next they were propelled back into the past. But it was a different version of the past. What happened?
Ah. So Deanna finally twigged to things, eh? It's sort of sad that she's realizing things now that she's moving away. Does this mean that her parents got their memories back before her and want to avoid her marrying Mike?

This has definitely crossed my mind. Why else would they be altering their timing? Of course, what they'd really need to prevent is the car accident and reunion in university--but maybe they are thinking they need to get Deanna away while she's young enough that she's unlikely to remember Mike if they do meet as young adults.
For that to happen, they'd have to write themselves a note saying "April 25, 1996: Drive Deanna home from University" or else the whole damned thing will happen all over again. A Deanna that left five years earlier might not remember Mike (Mira (or Eva) sure didn't) but they can't take that chance.
You know the more I read this strip, the more it seems like a sci-fi horror story. Little Deanna coming to the realization that she was married to Mike, and maybe she even remembers having children with Mike. Imagine looking forward to that? It's almost like knowing in advance you are going to die in a very painful way.
I never saw the older strips so I had no idea Lynn was mangling the timeline like this. When you say you're going to do reruns, that's accepted to mean in the same order they were originally published in. Anything different needs to be made clear to the readers so those familiar with the older strips--and that's going to be a large number of current readers--don't get totally and completely confused, causing their brains to go melty and smoke to pour out of their ears. ;)
dc2, the Sobinskis would probably be well advised to encourage Deanna to go to a different university entirely. Even if they managed to prevent the car accident, there's still a danger that Mike and Deanna could meet another way on-campus. "Deanna, darling--I've heard such wonderful things about studying abroad. Here are some brochures from the University of Melbourne!"
hoppytoad79, it seems possible that Lynn wants to make our brains go melty and smoke to come out of our ears. "That'll keep those continuity freaks quiet!" ;)
If Lynn is skipping ahead four years, I think maybe it means that the retread is unpopular and will come to a halt soon. Lynn is hurrying to do some of the storylines she talked about wanting to "fill in" before that happens.
Doesn't Lynn have some kind of lawyer or business adviser to tell her that trashing her strip's continuity like this will make it much harder to sell treasuries? I would think that potential future income would be a concern for her if she really is "broke."

I think this is probably right, qnjones. LJ made kind of a big deal of her plans to fill in details about the Sobinski family's disappearance from the strip. Her doing so long before this originally happened suggests she doesn't expect the new-runs to be around long enough to stick with the old continuity on the move.

Good question. Another is whether she'd even listen if she had advisers telling her, though--she knows all, remember? ;)
Ooo...I did NOT realize that Deanna actually moved away when she was ten in the original run! Deanna's parents hurrying things up to get her away from the awful, future son-in-law makes so much sense it isn't funny! I wonder what Lawrence and Deanna will get up to...and Liz too, even though she can't talk.

Yes! The more I write/draw it, the more I feel that way, too.

My WAG:

I'm having fun thinking that through. :)
