Patterparenting

Mike gets so upset that in the last panel, he morphs into Moe Howard and loses a stripe from his shirt. :-P

In other news, I will be away Thursday through Saturday, on a work trip. I've already scheduled Friday's strip to self-post, but I won't be able to do a whole lot of commenting. :)

Reliving vs. Retelling

LJ ran the "Michael inhales his food so he won't taste it strip" in July of last year--during the failed "hybrid" experiment--as well as yesterday. I'm pretending she hadn't dropped the "telling Meredith" frame.

Interlude

I never really got the whole "Marian" worship the strip had at times. If she really would have made a casserole out of that garbage.... Blecch. Anyway, just a quiet moment where Elly comes right up to the edge of realizing that Marian's not so great.

By some wild coincidence, both of Lawrence's fathers work at the same Brazilian hospital!

Since Pete Landry has never been shown in the strip, I got to decide what he looks like. He's supposed to be handsome, so that's what I was going for. As for the Pablo/Paolo thing, many snarkers have noticed that Lynn didn't seem to notice that Portuguese, not Spanish, is the language of Brazil. Pablo is a Spanish name, while Paolo is Portuguese.

Edit: ...And yes, I am aware that there exist in Brazil people named "Pablo." That name combined with the fact that Lynn had him give Connie a Spanish nickname (let alone its pejorative connotation) led many readers to the impression that Lynn mistakenly thought that Spanish was the language of Brazil. And it amused me to imagine that Connie had somehow managed to be oblivious of this AND get Paolo's name wrong. (Hi, Josephus Rex!)

Evasion

Somehow, when I try to use an Elly profile as a reference, I end up with a mutant-looking head, where the top portion of the head is either ridiculously undersized or massively over-sized. After drawing and erasing a few times, I ended up using a profile from Comics Crash Course as a reference, and then overlaying the "Elly" features. I'm still not satisfied with the "Elly" profiles I ended up with, but they're better than they were.

Happy birthday, Apes...

Edit: Gah, I was so rushed this morning, I didn't have a chance to add any commentary. (I know the "rush" aspect really shows, but it was that or not get the strip up today, and I really wanted to get it up on April's actual birthday!) Anyway, I wanted to give a little shout out to dreadedcandiru2; his comment over at Foobiverse, that today's foob strip should have Elly freaking out over April turning 18, gave me the idea to show her celebration in their parallel time frame....
